If you rented a car in Tbilisi and think where to go – definitely recommend visiting beautiful and mysterious Prometheus Cave in the south of Georgia!
The cave of Kumistavi was discovered by chance during an expedition by cavers in 1983. For the next 2 years, it was open only to researchers – various kinds of research were conducted in the cave.
In the 90s, they began to develop tourist routes, but soon it all stopped and forgot about the cave. In 2007, invited experts from different countries helped to equip the cave for tourists, in 2010 it was renamed Prometheus Cave, and since 2011 it has opened for tourist groups.
From Tbilisi to the cave – a little more than 240 km. By the car it takes 3.5-4 hours.
The 1600 m long route passes through huge grottoes, stalactites and stalagmites, underground waterfalls, a river and other fascinating beauties of the underworld.
Cost of attendance in a group:
for an adult 20 GEL
for children 5 GEL
boating on the lake (about half a kilometer) 15 GEL
The price of the ticket includes a guide and the delivery of tourists (to the parking lot) on the train.
Prometheus Cave Hours:
November – April: 10:00 – 17:00;
May – August: 10:00 – 18:00;
September – October: 10:00 – 17:30.
It makes sense to take a long-sleeved jacket with you (the temperature in the cave stays at + 14C) and water.
