The 50-meter dome of the monastery can be seen in the Alazani Valley of Kakheti. Interestingly, before the construction of the Tsminda Sameba temple in Tbilisi, the Alaverdi monastery was the highest church building in Georgia!

The cathedral was built in the 10th century AD, and the monastery was still 3 centuries earlier known by the Syrian founder of the Georgian territories, Joseph Alaverdeli. By the way, the name of the monastery in Arabic means “God-given.”

This monastery was ruined by invaders and erected again, natural disasters destroyed – and people rebuilt.

In the 17th century, the Persians captured this land and made a cowshed from the monastery building. The monastery was revived after their expulsion and existed until 1929, that is, before the beginning of Soviet power over these lands.

Despite all the destruction and restructuring of the building has retained its ancient architecture. The only thing that has been lost forever is the gallery where the tombs of the kings of Kakheti were built.

Now, around the monastery are huge vineyards, the monks themselves harvests and make very tasty wine.

Alaverdi Monastery is not an open tourist place, it is an active male abode. Tourists can not enter the territory of the monastery, but only in the cathedral. The prohibition to take pictures inside, the ban on the entrance in T-shirts, shorts. Women are required to wear headscarves and long skirts.

From Tbilisi to the monastery is about 2 hours by car. On the way, you will see beautiful landscapes and sights.
